The low key effect is one that contains predominantly dark tones and colors. and is usually dramatic and full of mystery. Shadows will be the primary element of the composition.
Also known as the The "Rembrandt lighting" (or "Rembrandtian light"), the term was named after the style of lighting the face in most of Rembrandt's self-portraits and is common in Baroque paintings.
