What is a cathode, and what is its role in lithium-ion batteries? In our previous video, we discussed what an anode is in lithium battery chemistry. Unlike an anode, a cathode is a negative electrode that gains electrons. We explain how the cathode receives electrons from the anode and how both electrodes work together to generate electricity. We discuss the materials that make good cathodes, such as metallic oxides like copper and lithium oxide.
