Sometimes after bunion surgery (well, any joint surgery) we see stiffness more than the norm. This can mar the overall result but it can be helped with manipulation and mobilisation. If the patient can do this themselves (little and often) the joint will stretch out over time. If they can or won't (esp. if the joint is SORE) this can be done for the patient under anaesthesia. Once the joint is pain free (post-local or general anaesthesia) the practitioner can aggressively stretch the joint as needed. On occasion I will then use a steroid shot to help with fibrosis/RoM.
