During WW1, on the 31st of October, 1917, the 4th and 12th regiments of the Australian Lighthorse made what became of the last great mounted charges in history, in an attempt to take the Ottoman defended town of Beersheba (also known as Be'er Sheva) for the British.
Armed only with bayonets, as their rifles were slung over their backs, they galloped across some 3 miles (5 km) under fire from heavy artillery.
(Scene from the1987 film, The Lighthorsemen)
