In this video we introduce New Muslims to 5 Islamic phrases that they will be using regularly in the future. We present proof from the Quran and Sunnah (hadeeth) regarding the validity of the statements and what the phrases signify:
1. Bismillah and its variants
a. Bismillah
Hadeeth Evidence
‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “When one of you eats some food, let him say Bismillah, and if he forgets to do so at the beginning, let him say Bismillah fi awwalihi wa aakhirihi. Tirmidhi, 1781
b. Bismillah Al Rahman Al Raheem
Quranic Evidence:
In the Name of Allah the Most Compassionate the Most Merciful
Ch. 1 V. 1
Quranic Evidence
[The Queen of Sheba said:] “It is from Solomon and it reads: In the Name of God, Most Majestic, Most Merciful.”
(Quran 27:30;)
c. Bismillah Tawakaltu Ala Allah Wala hawla wala kuwata illa billah
Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “Whoever says upon leaving his house:
Bismillaahi, tawakkaltu 'alallaahi, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah " In the Name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah; there is no might and no power except by Allah." it will be said to him: ‘You are guided, defended and protected.’ The devil will go far away from him.”
Abu Dawud report it with this addition: “One devil will say to another: ‘How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?’”
[Abu Dawud 4/325, At-Tirmithi 5/490]
2. Alhamdullilah
“And remember when your Lord proclaimed, “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you in favour. But if you deny indeed, my punishment is severe.” [Quran: Chapter 14, Verse 7]
Hadeeth Evidence:
On the authority of Abi malik al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“Purification is half of faith. The phrase Al-Hamdulillah (‘All praise be to Allah’) fills the scale. The phrases Subhanallah (‘High is Allah above every imperfection and need; He is pure and perfect’) and al-Hamdulillah (‘All praise be to Allah’) together fill – or each fill – what is between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is a light. Charity is a proof. Patience is brightness. The Qur’an is either an argument for or against you. And everyone goes in the morning and sells himself, thereby setting himself free or destroying himself”
3. Masha'Allah
Quranic Evidence:
If only you had said, upon entering your property, ‘This is what Allah has willed! There is no power except with Allah!’ Even though you see me inferior to you in wealth and offspring,
Quran Ch.18 V. 39
While others stipulates that the phrase must be Allahuma Barik
The Prophet (pbuh) said:
“If one of you sees something with his brother that he admires, let him pray for blessing (barakah) for him.”
Narrated by Imam Maalik in al-Muwatta’ (2/939), Imam Ahmad in al-Musnad (25/355),).
4. Jazakom Allah Khieran
Hadeeth Evidence:
Usama b. Zaid reported God’s Messenger as saying, “If one is done a kindness and expresses to his benefactor a desire that God may give him a good reward, he has fully expressed his commendation.” Tirmidhi . Riyad as-Salihin 1496
5. Qadar Allah Wa Ma Sha'a Fa'al
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive for that which will benefit you, seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If anything befalls you, do not say, "if only I had done such and such" rather say "Qaddara Allahu wa ma sha'a fa'ala (Allah has decreed and whatever he wills, He does)." For (saying) 'If' opens (the door) to the deeds of Satan.'"
