The Wildfire Events Modular Simulator for Resilience Monitoring and Enhancement, developed by Th Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) of National Technical University of Athens as part of the C3PO framework in the Horizon Europe R²D² project, addresses one of the most dangerous high-impact, low-frequency (HILF) events threatening power systems: wildfires.
The tool models the spatial and temporal propagation of wildfires and evaluates their impact on distribution networks, including line outages and spatiotemporal load shedding. It integrates Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) and advanced stochastic optimization to capture uncertainties such as demand, renewable generation, and evolving weather conditions. This enables the definition of optimal operational strategies and emergency measures to support DSOs in mitigating risks and enhancing grid resilience.
By providing a framework that couples wildfire trajectory, network topology, and available resources (such as DGs and ESSs), the simulator helps DSOs strengthen decision-making and defend the grid against extreme climate-induced events.
C3PO (Multi-risk Assessment Framework for Power Systems) is a product of the Horizon Europe R²D² project, offering a unified approach to improving the cybersecurity and physical resilience of Electrical Power and Energy Systems (EPES).
