1) When you express your strong will not to do something or tell yourself you are determined not to do something. (The readers can assume that there must have happened something hard or negative to the speakers in past.)

same as 〜しないつもりだ / 絶対〜しない


酒はもう二度と飲むまい。
⇒酒はもう二度と飲まないつもりだ。
I will never drink alcohol again.


人前で泣くまいと決めた。
⇒人前で絶対泣かないと決めた。
I have decided not to cry in front of anyone.


値段は高いし、サービスは最悪だし、もう二度とあんな店に来るまい。

No one will probably believe what he says.


この時間なら、終電には間に合うまい。
⇒この時間なら、終電には間に合わないだろう。
If it’s this time, I assume I won't be in time for the last train.

Nobody could possibly understand how much I was suffering at that time.
