On September 20, 2002, a catastrophic rock detachment triggered a rock and ice avalanche that swept through the Karmadon Gorge in North Ossetia, Russia. Originating from a sudden rockfall off Mount Dzhimara, the collapse of the Kolka Glacier released more than 125 million cubic meters of ice, rock, and debris. An entire village was buried, and a film crew led by the famous Russian actor and director Sergei Bodrov Jr. was also trapped with no chance of escape. This disaster became one of the largest and most destructive glacier collapses ever recorded in the 21st century.
