In this video, we examine the present and future of button-lock side-opening automatic knives. There are two main technical approaches: one is the spring-driven automatic design, established in the modern tactical context by Butch Vallotton, industrialized by Benchmade, and refined in the civilian market by Pro-Tech. The other, represented by CRKT, uses a flipper, assisted-opening mechanism, and strong lockup to achieve almost the same performance as a side-opening auto in a manual knife. We analyze the evolution and technical divergence of these two approaches, exploring their implications for both tactical and civilian use.
