In the United States, we measure fuel economy with miles per gallon (mpg), rather than gallons per 100 miles, or liters per 100 kilometers. Using distance per volume of fuel consumed causes a rather weird scenario for comparison purposes however, which is perhaps why the rest of the world does the reverse: volume of fuel consumed per distance driven.
