Semiconductors are one of the building blocks of modern electronics and advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Advancements will be key to overcoming limits in critical areas, including manufacturing and communications. We’ll explore how researchers are driving American semiconductor innovation in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s “Discovery Files”.
“This material can be integrated with mainstream electronics. We are very excited with the enormous potential of this new class of semiconductors.”
Zetian Mi is a professor at the University of Michigan, where his group, supported in part by NSF, has developed a new class of semiconductors with great potential for use in next-generation microelectronic devices.
The new wurtzite ferroelectric nitrides material has the unusual ability to have both positive and negative magnetism without canceling each other out.
The unique aspects of this material opens the possibility for a new class of quantum precision semiconductors with a superhighway of conductivity 100 times faster than the usual transistors.
Learn more about this research by listening to "NSF's Discovery Files" podcast, Next Generation Ferroelectric Semiconductors.
