The Roman Republic would end formally in 27BC with the Senate granting extraordinary powers to Octavian, effectively making him the first Emperor. Prior to this, the armies of Republican Rome would expand across the Mediterranean and destroy their greatest enemy, Carthage. READ MORE:

I suspect I might have gotten a couple of dates wrong in the video. Whoops!

Interested in picking up your own Hail Caesar or SPQR miniatures? Check out the Warlord Games online store: http://store.warlordgames.com?aff=10 This is an affiliate link which nets me a small commission if you do decide to purchase anything after following it to the store, which costs you nothing extra. If you're looking to support the channel and want to get some cool miniatures at the same time, feel free to give it a click!

When picturing a Roman Legionary I suspect most of us imagine first the Imperial Legions in the famed lorica segmentata armour, carrying square shields and the famed gladius. Before that, however, came the armies of the Republic. Curved scutum shields, horse hair plumes in their helmets iron chain-mail would have been most common. Exact colours are a matter of some debate, though red cloth would have been adopted as the 'standard' military uniform toward the end of the Republican period - I thoroughly recommend reading up from as many sources as possible to get a wider picture of what could have been correct!

Ultimately, the Rule of Cool applies in this case: go with whatever you think looks best and don't worry too much about it being a perfect fit, though you'll want to take a look at some reputable sources for ideas and inspiration. Two of my favourites are listed here:
