Freight handling is something I take very seriously on the Peckforton Light Railway. To assist with this, I have, over the years, devised a series of computer-based freight management systems - usually based around relational databases or spreadsheets. My most recent version was written for my 30 year old Psion pocket computer. It's compact (fits in my pocket), easy to program and has a screen which can be viewed in daylight. To squeeze the program into the Psion's 1Mb of memory, I have had to simplify it by, rather than creating individualised weightings for each wagon to determine their likely destinations, devising a series of categories for wagon types. This video gives an overview of those categories.
The Peckforton Light Railway is a hypothetical 3 foot narrow gauge railway which might have run through the Cheshire (UK) countryside in the 1930s.
