This is the first of three tutorials for Eric Clapton's guitar parts in 'It Ain't Right', the Little Walter song as recorded on the album, Blues Breakers, John Mayall with Eric Clapton. Here, we are looking at the main riff. For this lesson, I have shown my recommendations for the pickstrokes, whether to use up or down. It is not a piece that lends itself well to strict up and down, alternate picking.
This is a very lively number that must have been a great crowd-pleaser when played live by the Bluesbreakers (assuming they did actually play it live). It was chosen as the closing track for their groundbreaking 1966 album.
Eric will almost certainly be playing his Les Paul Standard through the Marshall combo here, but, working in Garageband, I found that a simulated Vox amp got closest to the tone. Whether you use a simulator or a real amp yourself, one of the key points is to use a fairly clean tone.
"It Ain't Right" was originally recorded by Little Walter (Marion Walter Jacobs) in December, 1955, and released early in 1956 by Checker Records of Chicago.
This one is terrific picking practice. Have fun with it.
