'Semele' director Zhang Huan found an old diary in the old temple that forms the main backdrop of 'Semele'. The diary belonged to the landlord of the temple and recounted his struggles with alcoholism and his adulterous wife whom he later murdered. After thoroughly reading the diary, Zhang found an unbelievable similarity to Handel's story, in particular within the spirit of the story.
