The 27 bones in our hands are grouped into three types:
🟡 The carpals
🟡 The metacarpals
🟡 The phalanges

▬ 📃 Carpal Bones ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The carpal bones can be found just below the metacarpal bones. They can be located at the base of our hand which makes up the palm, and present distally to our wrist joint. The interplay of these bones allows the proper movement and functioning of our hands.

These eight carpal bones are grouped into four and arranged in two rows: the proximal and distal rows.

The proximal row is the bottom row, which is making up the wrist joint and the distal row is the top row, closest to the metacarpals (making up the carpometacarpal joint).

On each of these rows, we have the following carpals:

👉 Proximal row: scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform
👉 Distal row: trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate

Each of these carpal bones is named based on their shape and appearance which matches with real-life objects, like scaphoid is derived from the word “skaphi” meaning “boat-like” (navicular bone). Watch the full lecture to learn the meanings of other carpal bones too.

We will also look at the unique shapes and features these bones exhibit. The muscles, ligaments, and tendons have particular anatomical marks where they articulate with the carpal bone, providing more support to our wrist and hand.
