Presented today is a Westminster chiming mantel clock, made by the Kienzle clock company out of Germany in 1927. This clock features a fairly large tambour-style case, and was originally sold by Fattorini & Sons of Bradford, UK.
Like most domestic chiming clocks, this one is powered by a spring-powered, pendulum-driven mechanical movement, which runs for eight days on a winding. It chimes progressively longer segments of the Westminster melody every fifteen minutes, on four very long and exquisitely deep and beautiful-sounding chime rods. At the top of the hour it plays the full tune, then strikes the number of hours on a longer, even deeper-sounding fifth rod. Though this clock is not fancy-looking by any means, it is through its chimes that it captures one's attention. It has a rich, incredibly sonorous timbre, and a hauntingly beautiful quality that fills the space around it. All in all a working man's clock, but very much one I am delighted to own.
