This truly divine fugue (ca. 1738/39) from Well-Tempered Clavier II, the most archaic of the whole collection, might be understood Bach's tribute to Palestrina, to Renaissance vocal polyphony. While the pieces of the WTC are not "restricted" at all to any specific keyboard instrument, this one is (I think) especially well suited for the organ. The fugue subject Do-Re-Fa-Mi-Re-Do goes back to Thomas Aquinas (Pange lingua, ca. 1250) and a long tradition before Bach, including works by Josquin (Missa Pange Lingua, 1515) and Froberger (Ricercar IV, 1658).
