A new report has found that India's household debt has reached an all-time high at 40% of the national GDP. At the same time, household savings has dropped to a 47-year low at 5% of the GDP. Opposition parties are blaming the government and linking the rising debt to weak income growth and inflation. In January, India's central bank RBI said the country's household debt does not pose "systemic concerns". The rising debt levels could also signal an evolution in India's spending patterns and behaviour.
