On a recent visit to Helen, Georgia, we decided to take a side quest to explore several historic covered bridges in the area and on the way there.
First up was Historic Watson Mill covered bridge in Watson Mill Bridge State Park. It was by far the nicest one we visited on the list so far. That of course is due to it being well maintained and inside the state park. It was also the only one we visiting that you could still drive across. It was eerie hearing the old boards creak as you drove across but was fun and something I've never experienced before. There was plenty of area to explore around the bridge and climb down into the river and on the rocks.
Next we drove a short distance over to the Historic Howard Covered Bridge. This one was down a dirt/gravel road, but was we maintained and wasn't bad to get to. It was a little more creepy to explore just due to the isolation and location of the bridge. It was still awesome to explore and was easy to get down to the creek to take a look at the water running underneath.
Then we made our way to Helen, GA and just outside of Helen is the Historic Stovall Covered Bridge. It has excellent places to pull off and park on both sides of Chickamauga Creek with picnic tables and areas for people to swim. There were quite a few people swimming on the hot day we were there. While probably one of the shortest of the covered bridges we visiting, still well worth the time to check it off our list.
Lastly we went to Historic Cromer's Mill Covered Bridge. This one was interesting because it must adjoin someone's private property as they have it gated off on one end and you can't go all the way through it. That's OK because you can still access it from Cromers Bridge Road and explore the area.
So glad we got to visit these old historic bridges and relive some of the past. It was really great to drive over one of them too, even if not in a horse and buggy. We're going to be on the lookout for even more to explore and try to checkout all of them in the state. Thanks for coming along on our adventures and consider subscribing for more videos like this!
