As I continue to document this project, my next step after attaching the back is to put the binding around the body. For this instrument the plan is to use ivoroid celluloid binding along with abalone and black and ivoroid inner purfling lines. In this video, I start that process by inlaying the tail joint--the seam where the two sides come together.
This inlay is both decorative and functional. The decorative part is quite obvious. The functional part is that it helps seal the end grain of the sides if there is ever any finish damage along that seam. The area is routed with an adjustable jig that I have used for a long time. It allows me to vary the width and taper of this piece from one guitar to another.
