Here's an early 'sneak peak' and recording of an organ + panflute piece played through my new transmission line speaker via a 8532W-4P1L amplifier.
This speaker is an adaptation of Janos 'Voice of Lancelot' (Real World Audio channel) with the same goals to achieve high efficiency and good low performance in an undamped cabinet. As the Iron Law and the use of a high-Zout tube amp dictates, this means a large cabinet (480L / 17^3 ft).
This enclosure features a tapered TL (TL- or reverse Voigt) which to me sounds natural and transparent in the lower registers and seems to avoid triggering room mode resonances compared to all my earlier mass loaded versions (ML-TQWT, ML=TL and BR). The intention with this setup is to add a midhorn for the DCM50 compression driver and a small Oblate Spheroid waveguide for the 65CDNT.
Lows: Altec 515E 16 ohm (320Hz xo)
Mids: B&C DCM50 (500Hz+)
Highs: SB Audience 65CDNT (5Khz+)
Compare the same track, in the same location with same amplifier, with dual Altec 414C:
• Organ and Panflute Soundclip via new 8532W... .
The only difference is the amplifier operating point got turned down somewhat. The 515E has much better attack / speed than the 414C and the 'hotness' which sounded fine on the 414s, sounded way overdone on this speaker.
Enjoy the clip :)
