My first time singing this song and rewriting it for current times. There is some debate about Johnson's meaning of the lyrics here but I adjusted the lyrics of the song with people dreaming of another place free from Jim Crow laws in mind. Here's my rewrite in tribute to Mr. Johnson and all artists, adjusted for the injustices and transgressions of our current decade.
Percussion: Mark Lee
Guitar: Bob Brumbloe
Harp: Glen Appell
Bass: Ruth Davies
Piano: Sam Rudin
Recorded at the Back Room in Berkeley, CA
Oh baby don't you want to go
Oh baby don't you want to go
Back to the land of Californ
And to m’sweet home, Chicago
Oh baby don't you want to go
Oh baby don't you need to go
Back to the joy of Californ
And the sweet home, Chicago
Now one and one is two
Two and two is four
Windy City’s loaded baby
Salt trucks all in a row
Cryin' baby
Honey don't you want to know
Up to the land of salted roads
My ICE-free Chica-go
Now two and two is four
Four and two is six
Redistricting’s the hell
Add more injustice in the mix
But oh…
Sweetie child we gotta go
Back to the sun of Californ
And our sweet home Chicago
Now six and two is eight
Eight and two is ten
Friends, they’ll trick you one time
They sure gonna try again
But I'm cryin' hey….
Darlin’ don't you want to go
Back to the gold of Californ
And my windy home Chicago
I'm goin' to California
Gonna get away from the Crow
Somebody tell me there
They give help right away
Baby….
Baby don't you want to go
Back to our vast old California
And to our sweet home Chicago
