August 1952. Marcel Loubens, an experienced French speleologist, was ascending from 1,000 feet underground in the Gouffre de la Pierre-Saint-Martin when the cable clamp failed. He fell 30 feet onto rocks and died 36 hours later deep inside what was then the world's deepest known cave. The decision to bury him underground sparked a two-year debate that ended with one of the most difficult recovery operations in caving history. This is the true story of the Pierre Saint-Martin tragedy, the untested equipment that killed a hero of French speleology, and the impossible choices made in the darkness.
