In October 2023, just three days after his 22nd birthday, Codey experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a fall down the stairs. He underwent both a craniotomy and craniectomy and was in a coma for nearly 10 weeks. After months in acute care, Codey began his physical rehab journey while in a minimally conscious state. For three months, Codey’s multidisciplinary inpatient care team at Sheltering Arms Institute worked to help him regain strength and awareness following months of immobility. As a former musician, music therapy was a key factor in Codey’s recovery, helping to increase his engagement and awareness and providing valuable insights into his cognitive function as he was unable to speak.
Codey went on to participate in our outpatient therapy program, ultimately achieving incredible outcomes, including regaining the ability to walk, speak, and return to activities of daily living and leisure. His words to others going through their own journey: “Never give up on yourself. Work hard and listen to your therapists and never lose faith.”
