Joachim Meyer's Longsword: A Play from Wechsel (Reversing the Grip)

Meyer is well known for the variety of techniques he uses, however some of those techniques are a little unorthodox and often dismissed.

In this video we'll look at a play from Wechsel (Change) which uses slashing from the right side, attacks with the flat, AND a reversal of hand position on the sword, making it the perfect storm of Meyer madness.

Interestingly these things come together to establish some extremely useful and valid fencing principles which we can apply to our day to day fencing, and so this is a worthwhile addition to the Meyer canon.

It's important to remember that while a play is simple, we can assume that Meyer included it because he's trying to teach us some important underlying concepts. As always, there are a number of interpretive elements in answering this question - fortunately most of this interpretation can be drawn from other areas of Meyer's text when he describes other techniques.

Additional notes:
At around the 2:40 mark when going through I omitted to mention a slight hanging as you cut around to cover the line in case they counter-thrust.
The use of the thrust to encourage a parry isn't canonical to the specific play, and is more relevant to modern fencing. It is, however, entirely consistent with other techniques in Meyer, and works nicely in a competitive context.
