I base coated my canvas with Liquitex Black Gesso available at most craft stores.

After the lines are cleaned off and the canvas is dry I coat the canvas with Gamvar satin varnish.I get it at Michaels. It is not water soluble and takes 24 hrs to dry.
Spray varnish is good too.
