If you want to get 500,000 km out of your 4WD, you don't need the best mechanic in the world, you need simple daily checks and good quality parts.
So when you are on big 4WD trips make sure you give your 4x4 a few quick daily checks like:
engine oil level and colour
all fluids including clutch, brake, coolant and power steering: if they're cloudy change them out
your belts and hoses: swap them over every 18 months or so
filters: if they’re dirty, don’t risk it…just replace them
gearbox, diff and transfer case oils
run a spanner over any nuts and bolts to check if they’re loose
brake callipers for mud which causes a lot of wear and tear
hubs for loose bearings or wheel nuts
