You sued your doctor.
For medical malpractice.
Your doctor laughs at your lawsuit and says he'll see you at trial.
Two years later, your case finally gets to trial.
You're called to the witness stand to testify.
After your lawyer is done asking you questions, the defense lawyer gets up to cross examine you.
He only wants you to answer his questions 'yes' or 'no'.
That's it.
No explanation needed.
Just answer yes or no.
If you don't know the answer to a question, tell him and he'll ask a different question.
Also, if you can't answer the question the way he asked it, don't answer it and instead, tell him you can't answer the question the way he asked it.
But now he asks you a question and the only way you can really answer it is to explain your answer.
You can't answer it yes or no.
You know the answer and can answer his question, but it calls for a long-winded explanation.
Can you go ahead and explain your answer in response to the defense lawyer's question?
The opposing lawyer will likely stop you in mid-explanation if you try to do that.
He will ask you why you broke your promise to answer only yes or no.
