“In Indian classical music, Saptak refers to a sequence of seven musical notes:
Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni.
These notes repeat in three octaves, or Saptaks, each with a distinct notation system:
1. Mandra Saptak (Lower Octave) – Deep, resonant, and low-pitched. In notation, a dot is placed below each note (e.g., ·Sa ·Re ·Ga).
2. Madhya Saptak (Middle Octave) – The natural singing range, balanced and expressive. No dot is used in notation (e.g., Sa Re Ga).
3. Taar Saptak (Higher Octave) – Sharp, intense, and high-pitched. In notation, a dot is placed above each note (e.g., Sa· Re· Ga·).
Our diagrams visually represent these three Saptaks, showing the placement of notes and their respective notations.
This structure forms the foundation of melody in Indian classical music.
Thank you for listening!”
