In September 1940, 68 German bombers dropped 136 tonnes of bombs on Britain's critical Thameshaven oil depot—or so they thought. They'd actually obliterated an elaborate fake made from canvas, timber, and mud that cost just £612 to build. Whilst the Luftwaffe celebrated destroying vital fuel supplies, the real depot sat untouched 600 metres away, still pumping 400,000 litres of aviation fuel daily to RAF fighters. This is the incredible story of Britain's "Starfish" sites—theatrical deception that fooled the world's most advanced air force and wasted thousands of tonnes of German ordnance on targets that existed only in their imagination.
