The Thief Who Taught Me to Love My "Difficult" Dog
I begged my parents for a dog every year while growing up, but they always said no. So, the moment I bought my own house in the suburbs, I adopted a Pitbull mix named Bella. I wanted a loyal companion to keep my kids safe, but honestly, after the first month, I was exhausted. Bella had already chewed through two couches and a designer chair. I was actually considering finding her a new home because she was just too much to handle
One morning, I stepped out to the end of the driveway to check the mail. I figured it would be fine to leave the kids inside for three minutes; Bella was secure in her heavy-duty crate, so I wasn't worried about her destroying any more furniture while I was gone
When I turned back toward the house, my heart stopped. The front door was wide open.
Suddenly, Bella came sprinting out of the house, barking like I’d never heard before. Panic set in. I ran inside and found my kids' bedroom door locked from the outside. I didn't stop to look for what was stolen; I just grabbed my children and called 911 immediately
When the police arrived, they confirmed it was a break-in. The intruder had likely entered through a back window, not realizing the kids were home. When he heard them, he must have panicked and locked their door to keep them out of the way while he ransacked the living room. He had bagged up thousands of dollars worth of electronics and jewelry
However, he didn't get far. It turns out Bella—my "destructive" dog—had somehow managed to break out of her crate the moment she sensed a stranger. She didn't just bark; she chased the guy right back out the window he came through, forcing him to drop everything he had stolen
The police caught the guy later that afternoon. How? He was the "dumbest criminal" of the day—he actually checked himself into a nearby emergency room because he was covered in bite marks and needed stitches
Needless to say, I never thought about giving Bella away again. She’s not a "bad dog"; she’s the best security system I could have ever asked for.
