Weather 101: Does Portland have a snow season? What does the data say about snowfall in Portland

Once the calendar flips to fall, we start to look at the possibility of low elevation snow in the Portland metro area and Willamette Valley. There is an unofficial snow season for our area.

We’ve seen snow in Late October and as late as late April, according to records that date back to the 1880s.

The National Weather Service Office in Portland says the first trace of snowfall in downtown Portland happened on October 29, 1935. The latest snowfall occurred at Portland International Airport on April 28, 1972. That’s a seven-month window that snow could fall in Portland.

I know that saying our snow season is seven months long is not only crazy, but it’s also not accurate. While those are the extremes are on the books, Portland’s actual snow season is much much smaller.

The majority of our big snow events happen in December, January, and February.
