As we are reading through Genesis, we are blessed to know the story of how God selected and covenanted with the nation of Israel. Conspicuous in the story of the nation are the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The lineage begins with Abraham then proceeds to Isaac to Jacob. Eventually scripture begins to focus on the twelve sons of Jacob who become twelve family “tribes” who ultimately develop into the Nation of Israel which continues until this day, 4,000 years later. One man, twelve sons, twelve “tribes,” a nation! Perhaps the simplest way to understand the twelve tribes of Israel is to begin with a study of Jacob’s blessings on each tribe in Genesis 49.
