A large helium-3 proportional tube is used to detect neutrons from a fast neutron source (5.3 mCi AmBe source). But the tube is insensitive to fast neutrons, so we illustrate the improvement in sensitivity as moderating and reflecting plastic is added around the source and detector. The plastic makes a dramatic improvement in count rate even as the relative position of source and detector remain fixed.
