Is the European defense industry up to the task? | The Bottom Line

European leaders are quickly waking up to a new reality in which they can not rely on America. Hence a flurry of initiatives to massively increase defense spending: increasing the debt break in Germany and an 800 billion euro initiative by the European Commission. But the question is – after years of underinvestment, can European defense companies pick up the slack and deliver vast quantities of equipment in a relatively short timeframe? The recent experience with ammunition stocks proves that the industry can turn itself around, with Germany’s Rheinmetall increasing production tenfold over the past three years. On the other hand, Europe can only produce around 50 tanks a year. So where is Europe exactly when it comes to military production capability? To help us answer this question, we are joined by two experts: Andrej Čírtek, the Spokeperson of major Czech defense company Czechoslovak Group, and Albert Zimmermann, Partner at Strategy& Germany.
