Nar Phu Valley Trek – History & Highlights

Location:
Nar Phu Valley lies in the Manang district, northeast of the Annapurna region, close to the Tibetan border.

History:

The valley was officially opened to trekkers in 2003. Before that, it was a restricted area.

The people of Nar and Phu villages are of Tibetan origin. They migrated centuries ago and still maintain strong cultural ties with Tibet.

The valley remained isolated for a long time, so the culture, language, dress, and traditions have stayed very traditional and untouched by modernization.


Highlights:

Remote and wild: Not many trekkers go there, so it's peaceful and less crowded than the classic Annapurna Circuit.

Tibetan Buddhist culture: You’ll see ancient monasteries, chortens, mani walls, and traditional stone houses.

Villages: Nar and Phu are two main villages. Phu is especially beautiful with old ruins and dramatic mountain views.

Scenery: High cliffs, narrow gorges, wide alpine valleys, and incredible views of peaks like Kangaru Himal, Pisang Peak, and Annapurna II.

High passes: The trek often includes crossing Kang La Pass (5,322m) to connect with the Annapurna Circuit.


Permits Required:

Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Nar and Phu.

ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit).

A registered guide is mandatory due to its restricted area status.
