Steps in order-ish.
1. determine how much carpet you need, keeping the direction of the carpet flow in mind.
2. Prep stairs: vacuum, any chunks of glue, plaster etc.
3. Smooth edge/ tack strip. 3/8" off the wall, arrow pointed to the wall
4. Underpad only goes on the top and extends just past the edge.
5. Measure width of stairs, don't assume they are all the same width. Cut 1/4" wider than actual to tuck down the sides of your tack strip.
5. Jiggle your nailer so you only staple through the carpet backing, this will prevent unsightly dimples.
6. Enjoy a beer, you earned it!
7. Work from the bottom up getting everything lined up (staples every ~1")
8. Use the stair tool to shape the carpet/ jam it up under the bullnose.
9. Coming up and around the bullnose use knee kicker to pull it tight working evenly from center/left/right.
10. Stair tool and mallet to smash the carpet into the back of the tread behind the tack strip, More nails.
11. Stair tool to tuck excess carpet down the sides
12. Bonus: kick it left and right to get it extra tight.
13. Remind your wife how great you are and go have a beer on the couch.
Scenario:
Shoot, I screwed the pooch!
No problem, even if you are running a bunch of stairs at a time, they can be treated individually, if one has a giant wrinkle or bad cut, chop that section out and re-do that one tread. Nobody will know and it will look seamless, just like how your triangle/ turning stairs are cut independently.
