I've been learning to dye yarn with food waste and invasive plants over the past year, and thought I should share my method here for those that are curious. And I'm an ASMR fan so I wanted to make it as chill as possible, hope you find it nice and relaxing while learning something too!
Just like eating seasonally can help you feel more connected to the your surroundings, natural dye materials change with the seasons and are great foraging fun. Even within seasons they can change, so have fun experimenting with items at different stages of their lifecycle. Take thorough notes if you want to recreate your colors. Also remember you must use mordanted yarn or the colors won't be as vibrant or stick around long, here is the simplest method if you're just starting out:
For every 100g skein of yarn, use 10g of alum and 5 g cream of tartar powders - both can easily be purchased online. Clean your aluminum dye pot and dissolve the powders in a full pot of water, and bring the temperature to 160F. Submerge your yarn, and hold the temperature between 160 and 180F for an hour, then drain and thoroughly dry the yarn, and you're ready to start dyeing!
Also note there are some pigmented plants that many think will dye well, but they actually only stain temporarily, and they will either wash out, fade to nothing in sunlight, or simply disappear over time no matter what you do. These include turmeric, red beets, purple cabbage, and most berries. But don't be afraid to experiment - if you try something and the color doesn't stick, you can always re-dye the yarn with something that will.
