Kia ora and Aloha,
This is ukulele number 423, titled "Ohana." Let's jump straight into the meaning behind this one
Before I get into it, I'd like to give a shoutout to Kaniela Ukuleles for their consistent support and advocacy for art and culture. I strongly believe that as we continue to share culture and stories, it will help us lead a more intentional, meaningful, and happy life.
This piece represents 'Ohana, which means 'Family' in Hawaiian. It showcases both Hawaiian and Maori cultural designs. The outer pattern features a Maori design called 'Pungawere vere,' which can be interpreted as a spider web. This motif symbolizes the family, understood as a large web of ancestors. The inner design, wrapping around the base of the ukulele, represents strength, particularly the strength that comes from each family member working together. The Hibiscus flower depicted in the design symbolizes grace, love, and patience, essential for maintaining a strong family bond. The Paua shell dot inlay serves as a reminder that when all these elements come together in harmony, they create moments of clarity and peace.
Every few months, I release a custom ukulele with Kanilea, and piece number 423 is available at Ala Moana shopping center on Oahu or on their website kanielaukulele.com. If you haven’t already, go check out their incredible store found at Windward Mall in Kaneohe or at Alamoan Shopping Mall downtown HNL
I typically don’t do pre-made pieces, but I like creating a story and design that finds the right person. If this piece speaks to you, I encourage you to take action.
Made with Aroha,
Sam Mangakahia
