St Ives The Island Walk | Cornwall | English Countryside | 4K

Welcome to our summer videos in Cornwall! We will be sharing with you some of the beautiful places from around this lovely English county.

In this video we are back in the lovely coastal town of St Ives in Cornwall, England. We begin our walk overlooking the beautiful beach of Porthgwidden which is one of the smaller and quieter beaches that St Ives has to offer. Set in a lovely cove at the bottom of the headland, known as The Island, this sheltered bay is lined by colourful beach huts and the Porthgwidden Beach Cafe. Leaving the terrace we head up the steps and onto the grassy slope of The Island. Although not actually an island this headland was once a fort and was a lookout point for St Ives. The Island Blockhouse, built in 1860, was the barracks for The Gun Battery and was where the gunners and their families lived. In 1859 The Gun Battery was built to help protect the area from French invasion before it was dismantled in 1895. The National Coastwatch Institution reopened the Coastguard lookout in 1999 to keep watch over St Ives Bay. There are 40 trained volunteer watch keepers and they work closely with the RNLI, HM Coastguard, RN Air Sea Rescue and HM Customs and Excise They also observe the coastal and marine life around the bay. On the top of The Island sits St Nicholas Chapel, a small beautiful granite building that was not only a place of worship but in the 18th century a post for revenue officers to lookout for smugglers. It has been restored many times over the years and today provides the most amazing views from all sides. We make our way down the South West Coast Path that winds its way around the island and also offers beautiful views of Godrevy Lighthouse and if you are lucky wild seals and dolphins. Turning the corner the beautiful sight of Porthmeor Beach comes into view. The waves here make this beach very popular with surfers and the St Ives Surf School is located along the beach. After descending the stone steps we finish our walk down on the beach looking out across the water as the waves come in.
