CRVdisc was one of multiple competing professional formats to launch in the late 80's that would fill the need for a high-quality video and still image storage format that was also random access and would never wear out. Think Laserdisc but slightly better quality and a LOT easier to make your own discs. Just hit RECORD.
In this video I'll talk about why the format existed, we will look around the player and the signal processor and we'll go through one example of a CRVdisc application: Simulator Rides.
EDITED: Yes, I do mention in the Ampex Quad to Umatic comparison that Umatic was the better format. This was an error. I meant to say it was *more portable*. Quad's video quality still beats Umatic in many aspects.
The Venturer rides sampled in this video can be found at the following links:
Glacier Run - • Venturer Simulator - Glacier Run
Astro Canyon Coaster - • Venturer Simulator - Astro Canyon Coaster
Smash Factory - • Venturer Simulator - Smash Factory
Fly With the Snowbirds - • Venturer Simulator - Fly With the Snowbirds
Castrol Car Rally - • Venturer Simulator - Castrol Car Rally
(yes, I am aware of the dropped frames on each disc rip)
