On day 12 we depart Portugal and return to Spain. Our route took us over the border near Badajoz and was made difficult by some extremely wet weather. Day 13 saw a big improvement though as we arrived in Seville. It was Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week. We wandered the ancient streets, the pretty lanes of whitewashed buildings decorated with flowers, to the wonderful Parque de Maria Louisa. We had not been exploring the Plaza de Espana long when a long procession of Penitents wound its way through the crowds. This moving display of devotion was so impressive to witness. Our final destination today though was not in the city that was overflowing with visitors this week but in the quieter surrounds of the mountains to the south. Here we spent two nights above the village of Grazalema. This claims to be the wettest part of Spain and it did its best to live up to its reputation. Sadly the mountains proved somewhat coy and only offered short glimpses of the wonderful walking country hereabouts. The tents on our site were waterproof but even with a heater were chill as the temperatures dipped close to freezing.
