01x04 - Storyboards and Pre-Viz - Making Words Into Images | Lord of the Rings Behind the Scenes

Christian Rivers, a Weta Workshop art director in the production team, drew most of the storyboards of the plot of the movie. After scene design was finalized, Peter Jackson used toy-sized miniatures of setting and characters, to review and decide on camera movements for each scene. The computer graphics program PreViz was then used to visualize the scenes with basic 3D models. This video uses the standard format with movie clips, behind the scenes footage, and interviews. We hear from Jackson, miniatures director of photography Alex Funke, Weta VFX art director Christian Rivers, producer Barrie Osborne, production designer Grant Major, actor Elijah Wood, co-producer Rick Porras, Weta VFX cinematographer Brian Van’r Hul. “Images” covers all the preparation for those elements of the movie. We learn about the storyboards and all the other forms of visual planning Jackson and the rest accomplished. We’ll see more detailed examples of these in the rest of “Visualizing”, so this program provides a nice introduction and overview for the subjects and how they were used during Fellowship.
