Much of the time spent filming lineside tends to follow a familiar, almost rhythmic routine. Hours can pass with little more than the steady hum of passing traffic and the anticipation of the next scheduled working. Yet, scattered throughout those years were moments when the camera captured something other than the ordinary—unexpected scenes that became lasting memories, often appearing in the most unlikely places.
Sometimes it was the sudden arrival of a newly introduced service or a surprisingly short train that broke the monotony. At other times, the events came in the form of unusual or experimental liveries, or locomotives caught mid-transformation, still wearing nothing but their primer coat. There were even occasions when engines appeared not on the rails at all, but strapped to the back of a lorry.
These unexpected glimpses added a sense of excitement and discovery to the work, turning routine days into memorable ones. What follows are just a few examples of the more unusual and noteworthy sights captured along the way.
