Maserati Tipo 420/M/58 Eldorado (1958) ex Stirling Moss - 410Hp V8 Engine - Modena & Goodwood FOS

The Maserati Tipo 420/M/58 Eldorado single-seater from 1958 ex Stirling Moss is the only one existing and took part in the Modena Motor Fest in 2019 and at the Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​in 2018. It belongs to the Umberto Panini collection located in the Modena area, at steering wheel we find his son, Matteo Panini. It was built in 1958 to participate in the Monza 500 Miglia. The chassis is based on the tubular one of the 250F; the engine derives from the unit that equips the twin-shaft 450S, a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 that develops 410 hp at 8,000 rpm. The gearbox is only two-speed, and the hand-crafted aluminium bodywork was made by Fantuzzi who inserts an aerodynamic fin on the rear. The name Eldorado, as well as the face of the young cowboy drawn on the car, derive from the sponsor, a well-known ice cream company that paid for the entire project. In fact, since 1957, Maserati had officially left competitions. Piloted by Stirling Moss the car had to retire due to the steering failure. Despite this, he ranked 7th. The following year, in 1959, "Eldorado" participated in the Indianapolis 500 miles with some modifications and red colour. At the wheel the gentleman-driver Ralph Liguori who unfortunately did not manage to qualify for the race. Maserati undoubtedly paid the price for not having participated with a real professional driver. On that occasion, he would surely have guaranteed Maserati different results. These are the only two official competitions in which the car took part.

La monoposto Maserati Tipo 420/M/58 Eldorado del 1958 ex Stirling Moss è l'unico esemplare esistente ed ha preso parte al Modena Motor Fest nel 2019 ed al Goodwood Festival of Speed del 2018. Appartiene alla collezione Umberto Panini situata nel modenese, al volante troviamo proprio il figlio, Matteo Panini. Viene costruita nel 1958 per partecipare alla 500 Miglia di Monza. Il telaio si basa molto su quello tubolare della 250F, il motore deriva dall'unità che equipaggia le 450S bi-albero, un V8 da 4.2 litri aspirato che sviluppa 410 Cv a 8.000 giri/min. Il cambio è solamente a due rapporti e la carrozzeria in alluminio battuta a mano è opera di Fantuzzi che inserisce una pinna aerodinamica al poteriore. Il nome Eldorado così come il volto del giovane cowboy disegnato sulla vettura derivano dallo sponsor, una nota azienda di gelati che pagò l'intero progetto. Dal 1957 infatti la Maserati era uscita ufficialmente dalle competizioni mentre i privati potevano comunque rivolgersi alla casa costruttrice per realizzare automobili da competizioni se ne avevano le possibilità economiche. Pilotata da Stirling Moss la vettura si dovette ritirare alla terza manches della gara per la rottura dello sterzo. Nonostante questo si classificò al 7° posto. L'anno successivo, nel 1959, con alcune modifiche ed una carrozzeria di color rosso partecipò alla 500 Miglia di Indianapolis. Al volante il gentleman-driver Ralph Liguori che purtroppo non riuscì a qualificarsi per la gara. La Maserati indubbiamente pagò lo scotto di non avere partecipato con un vero pilota professionista. In quell'occasione sicuramente gli avrebbe garantito risultati differenti. Queste sono le uniche due competizioni ufficiali a cui la vettura prese parte.
