Palestinian independent filmmaker Annemarie Jacir's crowd-funded feature When I Saw You recently won the NETPAC Prize in the Forum section of the 63rd Berlinale.
The film is a moving family drama set against the background of the Arab war against Israel to liberate Palestine in 1967. Tarek, a curious young boy of 11, and his mother Ghaydaa, are among a wave of Palestinian refugees. They are placed in "temporary" refugee camps in Jordan, where some of the refugees who arrived in 1948 are still waiting. But Tarek longs to go home to see his father. When he sets off to find him, he finds his way to a camp of rebels.
Euromed Audiovisual spoke to the director about making the film in Berlin.
"I didn't live in 1967, but it's a very important year for my family. As Palestinians from Bethlehem, it was the year that Bethlehem was occupied."
"It was a year of divisions and tragedy. But, at the same time, it was hopeful. It was the 1960s everywhere in the world and people were asking questions, they were trying to change their lives, they had the belief that they were connected to other parts of the world and that something could happen."
