Shiyazh Pete is humble in the mountains and fierce on the field. As number 71 on the New Mexico State University football team, he says he is the only Navajo playing offensive left tackle in college football. Shiyazh calls the field his sanctuary and his teammates his brotherhood. Together, they sweat, grind and identify their strength only by their weakest link. As he continues to study communications at NMSU’s College of Arts and Sciences, his goal is to develop his “superpower” – the ability to articulate, rally and command. Those skills, he says, will set him apart from everyone else. Through football, school, his hobbies and social life – Shiyazh wants to be a beacon to the Navajo nation. At NMSU, Shiyazh is building himself for the real world.
