Hello and Happy Fall my Friends, welcome to my Southern Kitchen and the first episode of my Fall Baking Series of 2025!!
Today I am making a classic dessert recipe of Charleston, South Carolina and a staple in the Lowcountry and Gullah Geechee Community, homemade Chewies! Soft and chewy it just melts in you mouth and loaded with Pecans and Brown Sugar! Perfect treats for the Fall Season and for the Labor Day holiday, these are so addicted you may want to double the recipe because they’ll run out in seconds!

1/4 cup (1/2 stick, 4 tablespoons) salted or unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon pure maple extract
1 extra-large egg, lightly beaten
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch table salt (if using salted butter)
1/4 cup toasted chopped pecans (almonds or walnuts)
Powdered sugar, for dusting
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease a 8-inch square baking pan with butter and set aside.
In a dry skillet over medium heat, add in the pecans (almonds or walnuts), toast for about 3 to 5 minutes until they are crisp and warmed through. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, add in the flour, baking powder and salt (if using unsalted butter), sift or whisk together until well blended and set aside.
In a large bowl, add in the melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and maple extract, stir until smooth. Then add and stir in the egg. Add and fold the flour mixture into the brown sugar mixture until well combined. Add and fold in the pecans (almonds or walnuts). Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Bake for about 20 minutes until set around the edges but still loose in the center. Remove from the oven and let cool completely. Dust them with powdered sugar on top. Cut into 16 squares, serve and enjoy!
