A gloriously vibrant programme. Herbert von Karajan begins with Mozart at his joyous, youthful best, in a divertimento written to delight the citizens of 18th-century Salzburg. Next comes Richard Strauss's swashbuckling tone-poem Don Juan. And finally, a riot of sun-kissed orchestra colour, in Respighi's spectacular The Pines of Rome. Back in 1984, this was the sort of concert that Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic took in their stride: a conductor and orchestra who moved effortlessly from the grace of Mozart to the kind of dazzling, super-saturated virtuosity that makes Strauss and Respighi leap from the page. Captured live on tour in Japan, there's a special electricity about this showstopping performance.
